We awoke to a low fog over the village and farm valley. We were the first up for breakfast, and by 8:30am we were on our way. The hotel host provided an alternative route to avoid the rocky ascent. Julie's foot was hurting this morning and the alternative route lightened the pain. That is, if one survives leaving town.
The village of Conques is built on a hillside and the streets are very steep. The town is a historical monument and therefore much of the medieval structures are preserved. One of the features are the cobble stones, which is extremely difficult to walk down. And going down a steep street is extremely hazardous. Slowly but surely we made the descent. But what goes down must eventually go up.
The ascent was gradual for about 6km and then it flatted out for the rest of the trek. We had taken an alternate route to avoid the rocky terrain and therefore our guidebook was not helpful. Hence every 3-4 km I would ask. The first time I asked a group of hunters (its unnerving when they are carrying rifles). The second time I saw a teenager in her yard, and when I entered her yard she went running in the house to get her dad. I'm sure she was shocked by my presence. The next two times I flagged a car at a decision intersection. In all, people were very helpful.

Our B&B had a pool area to relax and rest our tired feet.
