Oct 1, Villafranca 24km

Today's trek was marred by elections in Catalonia to separate from the rest of Spain. This discussion has been going on for a long time, and it's hard to imagine nations separating, when unions are making other nations stronger. The referendum by Catalonia to separate is considered illegal by the Spanish government, but Catalonia is proceeding with the vote. There is violence in Barcelona and it will not end well. Regardless of the vote outcome, many nations are siding with the Spanish Government, and therefore unlikely Catalonia will get nation status.

Okay, back to the camino.  This was a difficult trek. The net elevation was negligible but there were may ascents and descents on very rocky terrain. It felt like we were walking on dried out river beds. The scenery was beautiful and the camino took us through medieval towns and many stops for food and refreshments. One of the towns was having a bicycle and running marathon and difficult to find a restaurant. We stopped at a park and enjoyed the food we had in our backpacks.

Going through wine country.

Villafranca is a beautiful town and many of its buildings well restored and maintained. It's Sunday and all the stores are closed, and all the restaurants were very busy.

Leaving Villafranca in the morning
