Danang November 24, 2018

According to ancient folklore, a dragon emerged from the water on Non Nuoc Beach and laid an egg. A thousand days and a thousand nights followed before the egg hatched, and out stepped a beautiful girl. The fragments of the shell were left on the beach and eventually grew into the five mystical Marble Mountains.

Marble Mountains as the name describes is made up of marble and limestone. And the trek up was fairly easy, climbing steps made of stone and concrete, however a bit precarious because of the rain. Hence Julie chose not join us today to avoid a scary descent.

Apparently there are five peaks named after natural elements - water, wood, fire, metal and earth. Our ascent of Thuy Son (water mountain) took us past shrines, statues and temples. At the top there was access to caves and views of the ocean. Unfortunately, when we reached the top, it started to rain and Julie had left with the backpack which had my umbrella. We ducked under trees and into temples to avoid the rain, but to no avail - I got wet.

Big Budda - little budda

At the bottom of the mountain there was a gauntlet of vendors selling marble statues. Most vendors coming out of their store trying to entice us to buy something.  The statues are beautiful but not practical (due to size) to purchase.
