Sept 30, Ponferrrada 28km

Last night the evening skies were clear, but by morning we were stepping into the clouds.  The village is  1400m on a mountain side and therefore not surprising the air was cool and damp. It looked spooky since trail and way-finding markers were not easy to see. But it was an interesting trek, going through a few mountain villages. We were constantly descending over very rocky terrain. This definitely slowed us down. We quickly realized we could take the road in certain sections and avoid the rocky trails. I am always motivated by taking the shortest route from A to B, which amazes people and question how we reach certain sections so quickly.

These sheep crossed our path in the early morning. They had no humans guiding them, but knew where they were going.

I could hardly see Julie in front of me.

The famous Cross de Ferro. Adding a stone to the pile is an important Camino ritual. Many pilgrims bring pebbles from home to put on the pile.

Another entrepreneur putting out refreshments for hungry and thirsty travellors.

This pilgrim set up an a home to greet other pilgrims

A couple from Ottawa enjoying Spanish empenadas for the first time.

More friends enjoying Spanish tapas.

A lunch-stop favourite. We enjoyed an excellent burger.

Our lunchtime friend, deserted our table for someone eating prawns.

Ponferrrada is a beautiful town, and it's big attraction is the castle, which has been well preserved. There are a few plazas to enjoy music and food. We met many pilgrims in the evening relieved to have completed the 28km trek and we're looking forward to a delicious and rewarding dinner.
