Nov 28-30 Rainy days in Koh Samui

We arrived to this island under overcast clouds and light rain. The next day we ventured out with our umbrellas to explore the area, and discovered Fishermen's Wharf with its trendy seaside restaurants and small boutique hotels. It was not an ideal walk as we were dodging puddles most of the way. We decided to venture further tomorrow and visit "Big Budda". However, that was not to be.

We awoke to a torrential downpour, lightening and thunder. A bird was so distraught it sought refuge on our balcony and would not leave the balcony regardless of our presence. Around noon the rain subsided and off we went for a walk, however we did not get far. We quickly reached areas where the streets turned to rivers and scooters started to go on the sidewalk, which was higher. We quickly turned around and settled for a lunch of papaya thai salad and red curry pork, and back to our room to ride out the storm. What was surprising was seeing a few people in the pool enjoying the storm in a different way.

Nov 28 Travel Day to Koh Samui

It was a sad day leaving Graceland Resort and Patong Beach. Its such a hip and cool place, with one down side -- its too crowded. But no surprise, given its natural beauty and many delicious foods from markets and street vendors, which attracts more visitors each year. Lots of construction going on, and I'm certain in a year there will be even more people.

We were picked up before noon and the driver took the scenic route to the airport, following the coast. So many seaside towns along the route experiencing similar growth as Phuket, with new apartments and hotels under construction.

Check in with Bangkok Airways was quick and they had a special lounge for their guests - serving speciality coffees, sandwiches and desserts. The flight to Koh Samui Island was about an hour on a small 2-propellor plane and as we approached the island many of the villages came into view. We checked into the Ibis Hotel and a bit disappointed after staying in Phuket Graceland with exceptional large rooms. Our room is relatively small, but we have a spectacular ocean and pool view.

Last moments in Phuket.

Nov 24 Patong at Graceland Resort

The atmosphere at the hotel is spectacular. The staff are super friendly, the landscape beautiful and the food is delicious. Today was the meet-and-greet party and for an unknown reason we were invited to the VIP reception. Our travel agent (Steve) must have lots of pull.

Nov 23 Patong Day 3

Motor bikes are the most popular mode of getting around in Thailand, and its not uncommon to see families up to 4 on one bike. And many 2-year old kids standing up in front of the driver holding on the handle-bars. Hence, its no surprise that so many young drivers make it look so easy maneuvering  through traffic, and even sidewalks. They have so much experience observing the high-risk behaviour of their parents. As a pedestrian, it's important to understand their driving habits in order to cross streets safely. And every crossing is like playing in the real-life game of Frogger.

We made it across the street. Lets celebrate with a drink!

Weee...I'm a swinger.

We meet these cats every day, and they are loved by the kids in the resort.

Nov 22 Patong

We were told that this is the end of the rainy season, but it looks like it will rain most of our stay in Phuket. Thank goodness the rain is usually in the late evening and early morning, so we can still enjoy the day exploring the city and swimming in the resort pools.

WHAT TO DO WHEN ITS RAINING?

Go surfing indoors

Sit under a big tree...school children waiting to be picked up.

Have a drink..

Enter a drinking contest. The loser buys the drinks. A very dangerous contest when hammers and nails are involved!

Go shopping

Go to a Thai boxing match

Eating, try new foods.
