Road travel is an adventure, and for new visitors it can be a scary experience. Our trip from Hanoi to Halong was a slow and uneventful experience, however leaving Halong to Hanoi Airport was much different. For this trip the driver spoke english and was willing to drive faster. However the drive was an adventure, and not knowing the rules of the road is a disadvantage. Cars and trucks passed us in on-coming traffic but cars moved out of the way. Trucks making u-turns, stopping all traffic. Motorcycles cutting in front within inches of the vehicles. And the eight water buffaloes crossing the highway and stopping all traffic. For a native person there is nothing unusual about the drive, but for us it was a series of diverted dangerous situations.
