Sept 10, Markina 25 km

Happy Birthday Julie! And hard to believe we are also celebrating our 10th Camino. Over the years we've mastered the mental aspect of the Camino, but we've become more particular about the physical aspect, such as no walking on rainy days, avoiding dangerous terrain and avoiding dormitory accommodations (we need a good night's sleep to survive).

This morning we awoke to a torrential downpour, which means the trails would be muddy and slippery. And Julie agreed to a birthday gift of a bus ride to the next town, where accommodations had already been booked. We met other peregrinos doing the same. We arrived to Markina and found our lodgng - a rural guest house about .6km out of town. We then headed back to town to look for a birthday cake for Julie. Hard to believe, in this big town there is only one bakery, which had nothing Julie wanted. She finally settled for the Spainish traditional flan.

We also decided to skip this section of the Camino. There are still 50km of mountain trails to cover and due to weather conditions we're moving on to Bilbao and the flatter regions.
